Air quality forecast Belgium and Belgian cities |
![]() |
VITO provides daily 48-hour forecasts of regional air quality with its AURORA air quality model. The forecasts are given for Belgium at
a 5-km resolution, for the five major Belgian cities (Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Liege and Charleroi) a zoom at 1-km resolution is provided.
Note that the 5-km domain includes some areas from neighbouring countries, such as the agglomeration of Lille (France), South-Holland, and parts
of Germany, teh estimated total population in this area ammounts to 17 million. The Key User is the Belgian Interregional Cel for the Environment
(IRCEL/CELINE) who is in charge of distributing the forecasts to the general public.
VITO provides pollutant concentrations for the following species : O3, NO2, SO2, CO, PM10 and PM2.5.
The service is based on a chain of numerical models combined with satellite data, which run at VITO. The AURORA model is a three-
dimensioinal Eulerian chemistry-transport model, developed at VITO. It was designed to simulate urban-to regional-scale atmospheric pollutant
concentrations. The model contains advanced modules to calculate the relevant meteorological fields (the ARPS model) and transport and chemical
transfomation of air pollutants (both gaseous and particulate).Boundary conditions (both for meteorology (MM5) and air quality (EURAD)) are obtained
in cooperation Rhenish Institute for Environmental Research.
